Things to do in Clifden

Heather Lodge is in an ideal location for touring Connemara.

We are 1.5Kms from the centre of Clifden town where there are a variety of shops including three supermarkets. We have two banks and several ATM’s available in the town, there is a Post Office and three doctors surgery’s, a dentist and mostly everything we need .

The town has many pubs and restaurants , so a good choice for evening entertainment as most of the bars have traditional music each evening during the summer months. The restaurants are very good and the bars in the main serve food throughout the day and evening. Within a short distance by car there is the Connemara National Park which has a good visitor centre, and an audio visual room.

There are several good walks within the park itself, the longest being a two hour trek up Diamond Hill where the whole of Connemara can be viewed on a good day.

Kylemore Abbey is a 20 minute drive from Clifden and well worth a visit, this is a beautiful country estate which was used up till a few years ago as a girls school where girls from all parts of the world came to study. It boasts beautiful gardens open to the public and a small neo-gothic church used by the nuns who look after the estate but also open to the public.

The Sky Road drive in Clifden shouldn’t be missed as there are wonderful views of the Atlantic and many of the islands surrounding the coast of Clifden. It can be walked from the town or take a drive if you wish.

Horse Riding is available at three different venues nearby, a good one is at the golf course where a beach ride can be taken along our white sandy beaches. There are adventure centre’s, a diving centre , deep sea and lake fishing for those interested.

Lastly a trip to Inishboffin is worth a visit if you have time available, the boat leaves Cleggan every day at 11.15 and returns around 5pm giving you enough time to enjoy the island. Our beaches are lovely , and vary from quiet and tranquil to rugged cliffs , just second to none, and all with a backdrop of the 12 Ben mountain range.
